Happy new years to all!

second time growing hair out, last time had one and a half years of growth, and my hair length was midback.
Happy new year everyone!and happy growing! :)
Hello all, you've got a great website and wonderfully diverse community here. IÂ’ve been lurking for a while and thought IÂ’d introduce myself. First, IÂ’m one of those wannabes--my hair right now is about 3 inches max, and my last haircut was just a month ago.
But, I have had long hair, shoulder-blade length at its longest, from about 1992-1995. Back then, without the resources and good advice available today, I did things to my hair that probably count as abuse. I used 2-in-1 shampoos, I blow dried it, I put harsh gels like Studio Line into it to contain the frizziness. I also got it trimmed as soon as I could so that all of the hair ended at the same level (I think this is called a “blunt cut.”) My hair is thick and medium-coarse with some wave in it, and the result of the way I handled it is that it tended to really bush-out around the shoulders when I wore it down. As a result I wore it mostly in a ponytail. And when I did, I pulled that ponytail really tight.
I would do none of those things today. IÂ’ve found out that my hair looks best when I donÂ’t even towel-dry it, and I use better products that give the effect IÂ’m looking for without looking too artificial or more importantly, drying out the hair.
I hunted through my old pictures to find a representative image and came up close to empty. I’m not much of a photographer, and that period of my life I seem to have even fewer pictures than before or after. Maybe my friends were trying to communicate something? In any case, picture sharing wasn’t the effortless thing that it is now-—these days I get almost too many pictures from friends and family. I found this one--unfortunately with a hat on--at the windy Outer Banks.
Speaking of hats, when I was growing it out the first time, I had this mania for keeping hair off my forehead. The hair on the top of my head grows naturally forward toward the hairline, so as the hair got longer keeping it off the forehead became an effort. While growing it looked like this:
For a while, I even took my damp hair, pulled it back, and then plopped a baseball cap on top and let it dry underneath. In retrospect, not good.
Although I loved the feeling of long hair and liked the way it sometimes looked, I decided to cut it, based mostly on a set of pictures taken IIRC during Christmas 1995. My hair was tightly pulled back, and while these pictures donÂ’t bother me much now, I was appalled by them at the time--I thought I looked like a pinhead and that it wasnÂ’t working for me.
I did apply the two-week rule, though I didnÂ’t think of it as such. I simply waited a while knowing how much time the hair took to grow and how little time it would take to have it cut off. After a while, though, the decision stuck and off came the hair.
Since then, IÂ’ve had hair at lots of shorter lengths, including some fairly long periods with buzzcuts and a short period of shaving my head. IÂ’ve also had highlights and full platinum bleach jobs (ridiculously easy with a buzzcut but not something I would do today).
Hair has always been important to me in that itÂ’s almost always the first thing I notice when I look in the mirror and it probably has a greater impact on how I think I look than it would for the average guy. IÂ’ve liked almost all the lengths and styles IÂ’ve had, while I had them. My fatal flaw, so to speak, is that I do tend to get bored with the same thing after a couple of years.
So now IÂ’m growing it out, hopefully with a much smarter approach than the first time around. This board and all the linked pages have already been a fantastic help in that regard. Right now it's so early that nobody really notices. My goal length is below the shoulders, while keeping some layers in it. The next two pictures show what it looked like this summer,
and today:
Anyway, if you made it this far, thanks for reading. I'm looking forward to participating and posting the occasional update.
Chris
High!
I just watched the Costner/Reynolds movie "Rapa Nui" of 1994 about the decline of the Easter Island civilization... as it had been filmed on original location, most roles were played by native islanders, and astoundingly many of the men sported awesome long hair and beards, some even waist-long... I wonder whether it was real and if in real life, such a tradition exists on present-day Easter Island! Anyone around who recently visited the island? What about men's long hair in other parts of Polynesia?
See you in Khyberspace!

Yeah, says it all in the topic title. The other week, we all went to a show, and one of my father's friends picked us up in the car, she recently said that she thought I was a woman when we walked up to the car. Ironic thing is this woman has short hair, and looks more butch than feminin.

Probably it's been long forgotten by now, since I'm so late in sharing; but, here's a pic taken after my partner trimmed off about an inch back in Oct., --- thank God for talented dog groomers (amazing that a professional dog groomer can be trusted w/ trimming long hair more that a lot of actual human hair-stylists - lol)!! Prior to this recent trim, the last professional trim I had before this one was way back in the Spring of '04... At the rate I'm going, I guess my next one won't be until 2010!
Anyway, I asked him to shape it in back so it flowed into a natural-looking V-shape (it's hard to tell that in this pic; but, that's because I'm tilting my head back a little, to see if my mane can still touch my belt...)....
I'm probably pretty near to my terminal length, because my growth rate seems way slower these days (as well as thins out a lot at the ends). But, IF it will grow any longer, then... Onward and Upward! Uh, i - i - i mean, "Onward & DOWWARD!!"

I came across this site and thought it would be great to share it with you all. It puts a better spin on long hair. I'm encouraged....

Happy New Years MLHH! It's been a pretty good year for me and hoping the next year will be even better.
And also, this picture of me on the bottom is 2 minutes old. I tried to take the same angle as my avatar. Top picture taken on the day I found MLHH (October 29, 2007).
Here is a link to a letter written to my local paper that is in today edition. It amazes me that as we go into 2008 that someone is so against long hair on NFL players (and I think I could safely guess any man) that they would write a letter to the editor. (I had to check the calender to make sure I didn't wake up in the 60's)
1. Are you happy or relatively happy with your hair RIGHT NOW?
2. Do you believe you will be happy with your hair WHEN you REACH YOUR GOAL?
3. Upon reaching your goal, if you were NOT happy with your hair
would you admit it? AND...
4. If you did not like your hair long, would you be willing to cut it? OR...
5. Would you keep your hair LONG because it took so long to reach your goal?
Thanks
I have had no problems with the quality of my hair ever really, but in the last month or so, i have quite a problem.
I wash my hair every 2 days usually, with Johnsons baby shampoo twice and head and shoulders conditioner. I comb it normally then leave it to dry naturally.
The first thing i notice after washing is that streaks of light brown dirty blondish colour appear that look weird.
then, the next morning, my hair is stuck up everywhere as usual. When i comb it, it is tangled, dry and snagged and looks whicpy in places, i cant get it to stay down, and usually it looks really bad all day.
The day after, it is a lot better, it doesnt feel really dry anymore and is easier to comb.
Sometimes i leave it another day, because it looks and feels best 3 days after washing, easy to comb and soft.
What am i doing wrong?
(English isn't my first language so please bare with me!)
Hi there!
I've been growing my hair for more than 3 years now and as you can imagine, it's pretty damn long. Looking back, I can't even remember why I decided to grow it long in the first place. Maybe because my best friend had long hair or because I was getting into heavy metal and a lot of my idols had long hair or maybe I just thought it would look cool - I don't know. But I do know that I'm sick of having long hair, here are some reasons why:
1) Maintenance.
I have to comb it, wash it with special conditioners and shampoos every day (or every other day) to not look like a complete bum. And my hair still doesn't look exactly the way I want it to! Taking showers has become an extremely annoying procedure. I really miss the good old times when I could just take a shower in 3 minutes and go right outside. Also, I spend quite a lot of money on those shampoos and conditioners. So yeah, this is a major reason.
2) People see my long hair before they see me.
People often judge me before they even get to know me, but I think subconsciously this is one of the reasons why I started growing my hair long. I used to be this really shy, quiet kid. Maybe I thought long hair would give me some sort of identity and other people I could relate to. Maybe I thought it was cooler to be referred as "Joe, the long haired dude" than just Joe. Well I'm not that shy person any more.
3) Sexual appeal. I had no idea that many girls think of long hair as a turnoff. I used to say to myself that girls who don't like you just because you have long hair are just shallow, but that's not right at all! For example, I don't find redheads attractive, does that make me shallow? Of course not, the disliking of long hair on men is just a common preference but I had no idea it was that common. I'm 17 years old and these are my "fooling around years". My long hair is an extra obstacle I have to cross when approaching girls and it's making me miss out.
The only good side of having long hair is that I guess I look cooler on stage with my band. But I think I'd rather look attractive to girls than cool on stage.
I was pretty much ready to go to the barbershop before I met a girl who likes long hair (AND is good looking!!!). But I swear, I'm going to the barbershop the day we break up.
Phew, had to get that off my chest :D So how about you guys? Ever seriously considered cutting your hair?
Happy New Year everyone!
First off, I get confused on the New Year as I work for a school system and I am more accustom to the New Year being the start of the school year in the fall. LOL
Can you believe it, I went an entire year without getting zapped! well, I do have a few days left and I need to relabel that fuse box at the other house. I guess I will have to be careful on doing that. Pszzzt!
I did accomplish my goal for the year, which was to buy a house. Now if I could just find the perfect lady to accompany me. Being a crazy long haired nerdy guy could present a challenge.
Hope all is well!,
Mike

hey guys
thought it was about time to post a pic, been growing my hair out from short haircut now for 2 1/2 yrs with several trims all the way to even out the ends. figure i would post a pic too
It's 3:30 am and I have just gotten in from a night out on the town. I was given 3 phone numbers (one of which I kept) and I had 5 people proposition me; 4 men and one woman to be exact. It was a gay club, but, what the heck. I just read that even most gay men don't like long hair. WRONG!
My point is simply this: In my opinion, all the comments on here that I read about women and men preferring short hair is totally unfounded. Actually, I think just the opposite. I think that many people, especially women, prefer short hair on a man because they think it is too sexual; much like wearing a shirt that isn't buttoned up enough, or, pants that fit too suggestively. As far as IÂ’m concerned the myth about long hair being unattractive, or, less attractive is false and I have the phone numbers to prove it.
jeffrey.

I've been meaning to ask this question for a long time now; but everytime it comes up I'm either too busy w/ work and/or too tired to bother.
I mean, I completely understand when somebody says, "shoulder-blade length" or, "mid-back" or, "waist" or, "belt-length or, "butt-length" or, "hips", or...
But what the hell is, "classic?" What part of the body is THAT? The only time someone ever said that to me was several years ago (oddly enough, when my hair was much shorter, around mid-back length), when a co-worker said, "WOW, your hair looks great that way at that classic length!" At the time this guy said this, I thanked him with my best manners, of course; but around here occasionally someone will comment about someone's hip-length hair as "classic length"...
So, does that mean my current length is now, "UNclassic?", --- or just, "low class"-ICK!!
I think this term is one that they use over at the women's long hair place... where they refer to "bra-strap lenght", etc....
Apologies over being in a grumpy and sarcastic mood right now. It's just that I have to go back to work for another loooooong, grueling day, --- and if I see that term flung around one more time when I'm too tired to respond, I'm gonna be even WORSE (lol)!!

Hello Friends, I was in Paris recently and noticed a lot of men with quite long hair. It was especially gratifying to see older men with long hair. What was interesting was that many of these men had their long hair "styled" (I don't know what other word to use).
In other words, their long hair often appeared to be layered or perhaps some of it was thinned out to avoid a bushy look or to encourage the hair to hang a certain way.
I know that most of us don't ever want to cut out hair but I thought this approach was interesting for those men who feel they can't wear their hair long because of their professional job, etc. Of course this was Paris ("capital of fashion") and these men looked wonderful in their beautifully tailored clothes and "coiffed" long hair!
Any thoughts on this? Maybe this look is happening in other big cities?
