Hello everyone and a happy new year to all of you. Yesterday I went to Manhattan to witness the ball drop at midnight and party a bit. I couldn't help but notice many types of long haired males in the crowd and it cheered me up quite a bit. I live in Brooklyn so the only longhairs I see here are "gangstas" with dreadlocks or the occasional random longhair. In Manhattan I saw many people of all kinds. Most of all I was surprised to see many businessmen types with long hair. It made me feel good knowing that I live in a city that is so accepting. I will take it upon myself to spend more time in Manhattan this year. Anyway I wish you all the best and success in all this years endeavors.
Isaac.

I thought I would post it early because who knows what time I will be up tomorrow or what condition I will be in when the clock strikes midnight. lol

so if you have not thought up of another New Years Resolution the only one I could suggest is to grow your hair long(if it's short) or keep it long(if it already is)

a different look. instead of my hair down, this is my hair at the end of my shoulders.

I have been viewing this series for the past few weeks and have noticed that many of these guys such as Bruce Dickinson(Iron Maiden) are wearing these short crops now.
even the Phil Cohen(Def Leppard) has much shorter hair than Johnny Rotten did in 1976!

even some hosts of Metal shows have short cropped styles now!

I recall back in the `80s when all Metal and Rock guys had long hair!

what do you think transpired to make it acceptable for Metal and Rock guys, both musicians and fans to get short cropped styles.

the kids today are being entertained by many short haired bands and weren't around when the average musician had long hair.

I truly miss the old days and hope there is definite resurrection of LONG HAIR music into the mainstream again!!

The way long hair has for women?

the reason I ask this is because I ran across this clip on youtube
by accident and could not believe that women and girls actually wore their hair in these styles back then.

it looks like helmet hair on a bad day, sprayed stiff and a person whom I spoke with said back then long hair was not that common on women like it is now.

what do you think guys? do you think in 20 years long hair for Men will be the norm?

While out on a trip surveying trails for damage post windstorm, I had to stop and take hair pictures up at Wind Caves.

Can I call this almost knee?

As I recall it was the punk subculture which sprung up in the U.K. as a reaction to the mainstream culture of the day.

there were many young unemployed kids such as John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten who despised the fact that there were a few bands that were filthy rich making money off of 'yobs' like him.

as a reaction, the young people formed their own bands and changed their hair fashion as a reaction against the dominate mainstream music culture which was at that time as every historian knows-Long hair! these punk bands could not play their instruments and were self-taught from the beginning learning along the way.

some punks cropped their hair and spiked it short like Rotten did, others shaved theirs into Mohawks and spiked them or completely shaved their heads bald. this applied to female punks as well.

in the U.S. many in the hardcore "straight edge" movement such as Minor threat and others associated long hair with drugs and the 1970s in general.
Ian MacKaye shaved his head and discussed his reasons in some early 1980s film on the growing punk movement in the U.S.

in addition to the punks, the 'gangsta' subculture also introduced buzzed styles such as the 'fade' which caught on as a mainstream "style".

awhile back I almost burst out laughing at some interview some guy did with two girls with long hair who looked completely normal calling themselves 'punks'. they cited Avril Lavigne as one of their favorites.

back in the 1980s that was unheard of because most of the punks hated people with long hair regardless of gender and you would be taking your life in your hands if you attended a punk show with long hair.

that was then and punk as it was known then no longer exists and today`s "pop-punk" bands have admitted to listening to groups that the old-school punk bands spat upon themselves including the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd.

The fact is that both the punks and gangsta rappers did resurrect clipper-cuts which influenced the direction of Men`s hairstyles.

also, it has been suggested by some, that the Gay community may have contributed to the rising popularity of closely clipped haircuts.

Fortunately, while a few women tried the Sinéad O'Connor look it never caught on and became mainstream while buzzed heads did for Men.
most women wear their hair long today while most Men continue to get clipper cuts.

what do you think must happen in order to counteract the negative influences of the punk`s and gangsta`s on Men`s hairstyles to usher in another "Hair" friendly decade which first emerged with The Beatles and Hippies back in the 1960s after several decades of Men wearing closely cropped haircuts?

I've been trying to get the longhair look for a while but I never knew how. My hair is wavy so sometimes its a hassle. So far my hair reaches my shoulders and somedays I think it looks good and others it just looks weird. What I'm trying to do is get it long enough that I can tie it in a ponytail. I think this would be awesome because since my hair is wavy I might get some pirate look :p What does everyone think? Should I cut it or keep it growing because all this time I haven't been taking care of my hair.
Cheers and happy new year's!

Indulge me a minute, friends. We all know that men's hair styles changed over the millenia and for many of the centuries, men did have long hair. Until the 20th Century, short hair was a fad, not a compulsory rule for men. Some exceptions include 15th Century French Knights (bowl haircuts),Roman Legionaires (shaved or crew). Interestingly enough, long haired English knights brought long hair to France in the Hundred Years' War.

Now to my point. It would seem the "Tyranny of the Mail Coif" is cracking. In the U.S., haircuts weren't big until the 1890's, when the "butt-cut" was high fashion for men. Add to that hairstyle the pince-nez glasses and you had your fashionable American Gentleman. But even then it wasn't compulsory for men to cut their hair. World War I brought that about for the first time when recruits were shorn, ostensibly because of a lice problem. Following the war, men just cut their hair. The Roaring 20's followed, and nearly every man conformed to the hair standard. And businesses made short hair a requirement for employment. Which was ardently enforced for decades.

Today, although there are few longhairs, at least tolerance has grown since 1970. I'm thinking many of you out there who are my age (I'm 46) do see some raise in consciousness. But it is up to us to press on with our individualism and continue to raise the consciousness of our neighbors. Maybe the 21st Century can be the Long Hair Century!

Apologies in advance to anyone who might find this thread a bit controversial or offensive. That is not my intent; but to anyone here who might be deeply religious and not have a sense of humor about it, my suggestion would be to read no further and simply skip over this post...

But, to anyone else who might be interested in ever attending a wack-o San Francisco outdoor event, then please read on!

Every Easter Sunday a group of outlandish-looking men wearing nun-like outfits host a series of oddball competitions, leading up to the grande finale called, "Hunky Jesus" contest. It's actually a fund-raiser that donates $$ to a variety of local charities; so it's not quite as bad as it at first might sound. There's also some live music and guest speakers /comedians, etc. throughout the day; but most people in attendance look forward to the silly contests. The event is held every year on Easter Sunday, usually starting around noon (although best to set up a picnic blanket on the lawn a bit before that, for a good seat with the best view), at San Francisco's Dolores Park, the stage being located close to the corner of 18th & Dolores Streets.

Not far from the park is a local Catholic church that has tried for years to put a stop to this event, because the men who dress up in outlandish nun outfits are called, "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence" -- which for obvious reasons, as you can well imagine, they don't find very funny...

For those who think they WOULD find this event fun & entertaining, however, it would make a great longhair meet-up destination for anybody who lives near enough in Northern CA, or planning on visiting SF this spring around Easter time.

I have only been to this event once -- in '04, with my friend Christopher who first told me about it, plus 2 other dance friends that joined us for a picnic on the grass. Unfortunately I also had another conflict that day, so had to leave early and never saw the hunky jesus contest; but Chris told me that an 8 year old girl won that year -- go figure!

In any case, although I usually work on weekends, I'm going to try to get Easter Sunday off this year... I'm long overdue in coming back to see this event -- and what better year than 2012 to go see it (LOL)!!

I ran across a video of a gorgeous young woman with long hair on youtube today and there is some sick freak harassing her telling her to cut if off and suggesting that HE let her allow her to shave her bald!

I don't know about you guys , but if this was my girlfriend I would be really heated up and want to know where this sicko lived so I could pay him a personal visit!!

Today I had a very interesting conversation with this guy who is an advocate for long hair on both Men and women who believes that when a persons hair grows longer it increases their intellect.

Now, I am not quite sold on this theory, but he suggested that because people like Albert Einstein and Steve Jobbs had longer hair at the time they were at their creative and intellectual peak it is proof that longer hair makes a person more intelligent!

now, as I recall Jobbs had closely cropped hair before he passed away this year so I am not quite sold on this theory, but would like some others opinions on this theory including Roger, who has probably done the most research of any member on this site to my knowledge.

Hello there fellow board members. As most people following my posts know, I am currently in my journey to re-grow my once long hair. For the past 5 months I have been posting updates on my growth progress (6 month update coming in 2 weeks btw). Today however, I have something different to share with you all. My friend recently discovered an old picture on his phone from 2 years ago and emailed it to me. I was so surprised and happy when I got this picture and had to post it up. This is me, 2 years ago with my long hair. You may notice its straight as opposed to my current wavy hair. That is because I used to straighten it daily, it's also part of the reason I cut it as it was damaged from the heat....

Anyway, here's hoping I'll reach my former glory soon enough,
cheers,
Isaac.

Hey everybody, in antecipation, a Happy and hairy 2012 for all of you, in case I don't come back anymore =). As I said before, my friends cheered me up to cut it, one already cut it, and one may cut it as well. They got pissed because today we hung out, and some girls mocked my mane as I left. They said they are tired of fake, idiot people mocking me, and they said it's my choice, but that they preferred a haircut. And I thought of reducing it to a "blond afro", as I had two years ago, and treat my hair perfectly as I do now. I only learnt how to care for it some months ago, it was chemically altered, and I never enjoyed the milestones, it was just hair for me(what a big jerk huh). I have been through a harsh period of my life with long hair, and i considered the possibility of it carrying some bad energy (has to do with my beliefs). Girls are not the matter, a special someone crossed my life, and she can see through the hair. My dream is to grow a mane like Tom Cruise's in interview with the vampire. I don't know what I'll do, but a revival would be welcome in 2012 =). And I really don't mind the waiting, going to appreciate it in the case of trimming it lol. Sorry for the gigantic post, but here is teh place to share such thoughts. Guys, I love you all, and this place. Thanks for being such interesting conversationalists. A Happy sucessful 2012 to you all!

Ps: I'm thinking about Baking Soda and ACV, some says it reduces porosity, if someone ever tried, would you care to tell me more about it? Thanks!

In all of recorded history this has got to be one of the worst inventions and why are so-called "salons" using them so frequently now?

Roger claims that cropping of the hair contributes to MPB and the reason women do not go bald is because they are allowed to grow their hair long.

now, where is the scientific data supporting these claims?

if this is factual and millions of Men in countries where short hair is the norm in the workplace obtain a copy of this book it could have some effect on the outcome of how Men decide to start wearing their hair.

what then will occur when employers continue to insist on closely cropped styles for Male employees if Millions of Men, who previously conformed to the company policy decided after reading Roger`s book that the way they wear their hair is going to change?

what does Roger or anyone else perceive might unfold if this is indeed proven scientifically by well respected scientists and Men are expected to continue with the closely cropped look or lose their jobs-their means of supporting themselves and their families?
