Hi gentlemen
Ok, so its been about a year growing now, from a shorter cut and I'm pretty pleased how things are progressing, looks like a) i still have the capacity to grow a decent mane, and b) it's still chaotic!! Hoorayy!!
Cheers

This guy's hair is so long and magnificent, it would make even the most die-hard short-haired guy want to grow his hair. His name, according to his Instagram site is Cleitom Njord Drago.
I'm wanting to grow my hair out long, but it's in-between long and short, where it's just uncomfortable. So now I wear a Christmas hat.

What's up?

Here is my current hair. I may have 4 inches trimmed off the ends.
Darrin

It's been a long time since my last post here about my hair, i've been lurking all this time.
I hope everything is fine with all of ya, you can see how curly my hair is already and can't even tell the full length of it just by the pic (If I extend my curl to get it straight, it hits the belt of my pants).
Take care everyone!
For the past few weeks I have an urge to trim 4 inches off my ends.

The board's been too quiet lately, so I thought I'd post something provocative that might liven things up - maybe bring some out of 'hiding.' Most of you, my brother longhairs, focus on achieving 'terminal length,' which as we all know is different for each individual, as each person's hair has a unique lifespan which is determined by genetics; ie, the longer the hair lives, the longer it will grow. So, many of us, when we decide to release our inner longhair, decide to let our hair grow untrimmed, to see what length we can ultimately muster.
This is not to criticize that approach, only to articulate an alternative one.
Some background. Up until age 20, when I first enlisted in the US Navy, and during five years between my service in the USN and the USAF - when I was a student in seminary - I wore my hair Long or, at least it can be said,"Long-ish." (In truth, I'm not sure when a man's hair becomes long enough to be called, "Long"; perhaps that's another topic to discuss as winter sets in, in the northern hemisphere!)
I guess you can say I started growing my hair long, most recently, from the day that I got my final haircut before retiring from the US Air Force. I left short hair-dom behind when no longer worried about AFI 36-2903. That was a a bit over a decade ago, when I was 51 years old. But I didn't swear off haircuts completely at that moment. I was working in the civilian world, in a high-visibility job where appearance mattered - I was working as a congregational rabbi - but grooming standards were by no means as rigid as they'd been in the military. As the months went by, I went for haircuts on a regular basis - though most assuredly not as often as I had on active duty - and each time I had a little less cut off. Over the next few years, my hair grew gradually, yet inexorably, longer. That's why I, unlike many of you on here, cannot say, eg: "this is five years' growth."
In the past four years or so, since I swore off the salary world and began working first somewhat free-lance and then retired altogether, I've always worn my hair at least shoulder-length, sometimes a few inches longer. It has varied up and down as I've tried to determine the best length for me.
I haven't felt it necessary to swear off haircuts. In truth, I now enjoy going to the salon, being pampered with coloring and washing and deep conditioning and finally, a cut of my choice. The last time I went a few weeks ago, it was to a salon in Gosport, UK, where I spent a good half day being primped and pampered, including a lovely head and shoulders massage. Since going to the hairdressers has changed from the military barber shop where one hears the dreaded call of "Next!" and then offers one's head as a sacrifice to the god Mars - I'm just kidding about the pagan reference! - and turned into a leisurely half-day that begins with an extended consultation as to just what kind of look I want to achieve and how we're going to achieve it, I very much enjoy going. And my hair, rather than making me look like a bloke who hasn't bothered to have a haircut in a while, makes me look (in my humble opinion) like a bloke who decides for himself, how to wear his hair.
I took the attached photo this morning, about three weeks since my last salon visit. I'm very happy with the look. Keeping my hair at about shoulder length allows it to retain its natural curliness, which I like; when I let it grow longer, it gets weighed down and the curl is limited to closer to the ends. Another goal that this length helps achieve is to make it easier for me to wear my hair unbound more often; when it's longer, I tend to tie it back in a ponytail more often, just to keep it out of the way. Nothing wrong with ponytails, just if I'm going to the trouble of wearing my hair long, I want to enjoy wearing it loose, which makes me feel so free. I still tie it back at various times, such as when sailing or bicycling, or when I'm out and about with my wife who doesn't like it loose. At shoulder length like this, I can wear my hair loose most of the time, yet it's long enough to quickly tie back.
The one thing I haven't decided on with finality, is where I want to part my hair. For some time, I parted it down the center. As you can see, nowadays I've got the part a bit off-center to the left. I don't have a lot of other options; my hairline recedes enough at the temples, that I don't like the way it looks if I part it farther from the center. I will keep playing with this aspect.
Anyway, that's my story for today! I hope all of you are well and enjoying your respective Longhair journeys as much as I'm enjoying mine! All the best...
Don

My wife took this photo of me in March this year, with my mane hiding everything. I am now at 5 years since my last haircut.

Finally did it! Any thoughts, feedback, and help are all welcome :) I'm so happy to have gotten to this stage and I thank you all so much for the support you've given me, it means so much. This is the first of so many milestones to come <3

Hi, everyone. It's been a long time since I posted. Been growing for 5+ years with a few significant trims to remove split ends. Trying to take better care of my hair so I don't need to cut it at all.
Anyway, I'm just going for, like, one more inch. Ha ha. That's what I keep saying. Originally I was only going for collarbone length.
Hi Longhairs,

On Being a Longhair
Hi everybody,
It has been one long year since I foolishly cut my hair! I'm kind of happy to get this much growth in only a year. My hair seems to be doing the flippy thing at the ends. This is probably due to the neck area. Hope everyone is doing well and your hair is progressing. Onward and downward for me from here!
Stay close, Ted

Hey guys
Havent checked in for a while. This is my third time growing my hair long. I have been getting lowlights for a while but recently stopped because tangles after the shampoo in the salon are brutal and I fear I am losing too much hair each time. I have attached a recent pic. Hope you like!
hey everyone! :)
its me again, sorry for the absence. school got busy what with college applications and not. my hair has been doing great, the very back is actually past my shoulder:) I've had some issues with it continually getting caught in things and getting pulled. for example the other day it got caught under my pillow and as i was waking up it got violently pulled. will this type of pulling damage my hair ?? i haven't yet learnt to tie it back so I don't know how to get it out of the way.
Thanks a lot :)
Avi
Hey, Guys :-)
I hope you're all doing really well.
I decided to come out of my shell a bit this weekend and interact with other longhairs at the Pretoria Pride march wich i attended this past Saturday.
I also took some pictures which i will post subsequently.

56 on 9/30 and counting
I work in a dirty factory so I have to wash my hair everyday.
Here's the deal with me. I have an oily scalp and wavy hair. Not real thick but about normal. IF I use conditioner on it, currently using the cheap stuff. My hair is very manageable out of the shower, but gets dried out the next day and all over the place. Feels crunchy too.
If I don't condition. I strictly finger comb it. Forget trying to get a comb through. But my hair feels much softer, appears darker and doesn't clump together as easy. If at all really. I would like to stay on this path but I am concerned with damage in the long run and overall health.
I was curious what are everyones long hair goals?

Good evening, gents. Im at the 4 month mark, and ao fr so good. Heres a little progress pic. Im definitely having an easier go of it this time around. Im also taking daily biotin, exercising a bit more regularly, and getting plenty of rest.
Just Curious.
I've been putting a little jojoba and peppermint oil on my scalp for the last week before bed (it's supposed to grow hair like rogain and if works then I'll post more on that). My hair isn't usually damp with water as well but was last night. When I wake up in the morning I get my scalp wet with warm water to move these oils and my skin oil to the ends after detangling with my fingers and then a brush. Well this morning I found a small knot of 3 hairs where the oil and water was. Argon oil on the knot wouldn't make the hair slip free and I broke them as far away from the scalp as I could get.
Does oil usually knot hair?

Hey Guys,
I plan to be in Florida Oct. 15 - 16, 2018 and again Oct. 26 - 30, 2018
I plan to make a pilgrimage to Israel Oct. 17 - 26, 2018.
I would love to connect with any long haired bros in these locations.

Hi everyone,
I made a short video again for the 7 Year and 2 Months mark. The hair is great and I'm still growing it. The lower 30cm look very thin. I will work on that for the future!
I have been trimming the ends towards all at the same length and I am happy with the result, I already like that the V-shape is gone.
I will also try the following
- avoid unnecessary brushing
- use more protective hairstyles
Keep it growing, I hope you are well!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrimyeXICTU - 7 Years and 2 Months Hair Update Video
I've had facial hair since I was 16 but started shaving the sides a year ago as there were just too many premature graying hairs. 2 months ago I tried dying my beard with Grizzly Mountain Beard Dye which is an organic plant based dye that has henna and indigo. I got the light brown as my hair is a graying dirty blonde but after messing with the set time to get the dye lighter I now have it as light as possible using a 10 minute set and I have gold. The beard looks good, but it just doesn't blend or match my hair. The manufacturers say it is good for the hair as well but wouldn't take as long.
So, if I try to dye my hair is it possible this non-chemical plant based dye is going to damage my hair? Back in May it was so damaged that I looked like I was going bald in the back but not so much now as it is slowly recovering with the help of oils. I attached a picture so you can see the color differences between my beard and hair.

Hi, Friends :-)
I trust you're all well.
So I'm shampoo browsing at my local pharmacy and came across multiple ranges which are proudly void of the following ingredients (in various combinations) :
*Sulphates
*Parabens
*Silicones
What i could gather from my sources (le web) the reasons why the absence of these ingredients is virtuous, are as follows:
SULPHATES strip your hair & scalp of natural oils.
SILICONES are comedogenic (build up and clog pores).
PARABENS m i g h t cause cancer and m i g h t cause allergic reactions (I've never had an allergic reaction to any shampoo yet).
Although the web may offer very nicely presented and easily accessible information, your personal experiences are worth far more to me. Have any of you guys tried a shampoo which is void of any of these ingredients? If so, what are the changes you noticed in your hair (good and bad)?
Thanks in advance, my friends.
PS: I also stumbled upon this shampoo (and matching conditioner) which aims to stimulate washing your hair with only divine light :-0 [see attached photo] . It's price isn't totally unreasonable. Do you think I should give it a try?
I've been noticing lateley that a number of older guys are letting their hair go longer I'm 64 and these guys are probably older than me. Anyone else notice this?
Hey MLHH,
I recently began taking martial arts classes at school, and I am wondering if they will affect my hair growth in any way. I sweat during these classes, although not very excessively; its normal sweat. I read that sweat damages hair, is this true? I hope the sweat won't damage my hair and ruin my goals of growing out. In addition, we do a lot of rolling around on mats as part of our training- a lot of this is done on top of my head. Will that damage my hair in any way?
Thanks :)

A lot of women seem to carry it off without much of a problem, if you condition regularly Im not sure its that bad a deal? Right now Im 8 months into growing it out again and last time around I must have bleached it around 5 times and things seemed okay.
Any thoughts?
Hello Everyone,
I am thinking about trimming just to shorten my length. My hair length is past my belly button. I cannot seem to decide. I am thinking 2 to 4 inches. In the scope of life this is a trival decision and. I shouldnt be that concerned.
Darrin
Does sleeping on top of my hair damage it? I tend to sleep on the side of my head, and I have a lot of hair growing from the side of my scalp so my head is on top of it as I sleep. Is this damaging to my hair, and should I change my sleeping position to something else? If so, what sleeping position should I change to instead? P.S. I already use a silk pillow
I would mention that our civil war group had out National
Encampment this past weekend and we had more guys with long
hair. In past years we had me and two other guys with long
hair. Now we have about seven. We'll see if the trend continues in the coming years.
I would also mention that my hair is still longer than all the women in the Ladies Auxiliary.
Hey All,
It's been a while since I last posted, got busy with school and all but I'm glad to be back. I hope everyone is doing great. The good news I have is, I talked to my parents about letting my hair grow out and they reluctantly said yes! So March 2018 was my last haircut :) As such I have some questions because I'm not sure how to go about some things. I hope you guys can help.
First of all, I should probably talk about my routines and goals. I'm trying to grow down to my butt, which I know requires a lot of time and effort. I also read that I should minimize damage as much as possible in order to reach that length. How do I know if my hair is getting damaged? I have no idea how to tell, having not paid much attention to my hair for much of my life. I'm scared I'm damaging my hair without knowing it and jeopardizing my goals. Currently my length is just barely shoulder.
My routine: I just wash once a week, with shikakai powder- it's a very gentle cleanser that's made of ground herbs, has zero chemicals at all. I've been using it since I was a baby and it suits my scalp very well. I use a wooden comb and I try to be as gentle as possible, but inevitably there are snags and knots that scare me a lot(what's going on there? yikes). Also obviously there's probably wear and tear just from environment as well as things like when I hit my head or when it brushes up against something. I've been trying to search for split ends but I'm so bad at spotting them, I haven't been able to find one yet. I don't touch dye, curling irons, etc.- I don't do anything to my hair except washing and combing.
Sorry for the long post- TL;DR how do I figure out if my hair is getting damaged? I'm very scared of damaging it and ruining my grow out journey. Thank you all for reading and helping, y'all are the best :))

Don't mind the dots on the E. It's an Afrikaans thing. Just "Daniel" is close enough.
I've actually been following this board since 2014 (my last year of school) but only now summed up the courage to post.
Since I could remember, I've wanted to let my hair grow out but I didn't really speak my mind as a child and South African public schools don't allow boys' hair to touch their ears, brows or collars anyway.
After I wrote my last matric paper (matric is what we call the final [12th] year of school) I wouldn't let anybody cut my hair again.
For the three years I was in college i decided to go No-poo.
As my hair got longer i noticed that my hair was getting ratty at the ends and breaking off a lot. So after almost two years, I went back to somewhat more conventional haircare regimes however it was extremely frizzy and fragile. I kept it neat with oils and fancy hair braiding however it was never the silky tresses i was used to seeing on my sister's shoulders.
So... well, i kind of lost the handle on my emotions in my third year of college, my grades fell drastically and my sponsors retracted. While very depressed and hopeless i cut my hair of bluntly right below my ears.
Since then I got a job, moved out, came out, and started growing my hair out again.
I admire this board not only for it's acceptance of men with a preference for long hair but for its acceptance of various religions and sexual orientations and genders and nationalities and personalities as well. For its emotional support and its sincerity. I've seen members of this board cut off hair which they had been maintaining for years and then growing it out even better than the first time around.
I woul like to become a better person an to associate with better people - people like you guys.
So... yeah. My name is Daniël but you can call me Daniel. I hope you're all having a wonderful day :-)
I started growing a full beard a month ago and noticed that people are no longer cracking jokes about my hair. I guess beards can be a distraction for some people?

It took me a while to get a routine together that works for air dying my hair in the morning while getting a shower at night. I've gotten into only washing and conditioning my hair every other night and the nights I keep it dry I do a good brushing first and then tie it back so it doesn't get wet. If u wash your hair then put a leave in conditioner in your hair. So, goto bed with damp hair.
It will be all matted and messy when u wake but u will get it wet again and this time it will have time to dry. Get in front of a sink with warm water and get both hands wet but put water all over your scalp. Water will move oils down from your scalp into your hair. If your hair is pretty long then u may need to spray the ends with a 50/50 water/coconut oil mix or whatever hair oil u like. I've started putting a curl cream in my wavy hair because I already have lots of small curls. Finger comb and part with a real comb. When dry in an hour or 2 there will be oil residue on your hair that will look greasy. Rub your fingers through your hair and use boar brush or Afro pick (brushes will take out the curls-embrace the curls if u got them and use a hair pick).
That's it. Once you've done this, it takes 10-15 minutes to do the water only wash in the sink each morning.
Hope this helps!
Marty
Who's the white guy-me! I guess I can say it then. I have wavy/curly hair that gets frizzy with most brushes and combs so for years I've taken the comb with the fingers route. It works but I read on Bill's longhair page a while ago that afro picks work really well. It wasn't till today that I tried it and u know what-he was right!
Going teeth up on the pick makes my hair a bit frizzy. This is something I've done for years with my fingers but never got frizz. However I just learned that if u go teeth down afterwards that it tames the frizz while spreading some hair locks apart so it gives u volume without frizz. Most welcome on my head!

Hello guys ! It has been awhile since I last popped in and posted any updated. You may or may not remember that I had reached 39 months of growth from a buzzcut, and I was feeling great with my hair. Well, the brutal summers here in Texas, and honestly the feeling of wanting a change took its toll. I ended up cutting all my awesome hair off that I worked so hard to acquire. I immediately regretted it. That was 11 months ago. It will be a year since that day (hard to believe) at the end of this month. I have had no trims of any kind since the last big chop, and look forward to being back to where I was and even more. Thank you for all the support that you guys bring to this forum.
Have you seen the new series of commercials from Samsung? They all feature a guy with a waist-length ponytail. A pretty good one too; nice and thick and straight. I was impressed that they would cast someone like that for their commercials.
Then I came home and watched a few with the sound turned on. Turns out, they're making fun of the guy! He works for the competition... And he's stubborn, set in his ways and unhelpful. So its a subtle slam against the competition and I cannot help but wonder if the picked him because of the hair. "Hey, how can we make this guy even more goofy? I know, lets get someone with ridiculous long hair..."
Nice hair though. Very nice.

I was looking for Vic's vapor rub and reading reviews on Amazon found someone putting it in the hair for growth. Is this safe? Here's the review:
Before I shampoo my hair, I put this throughout my scalp, wrap my hair in a plastic cap, and let it sit for 15 minutes. It feels like a cool tingling sensation, but it feels great. Since hair grows from the root, this opens up the hair follicles and promotes hair growth. After 3 months of doing this every 2 weeks or so, my hair has thicken up allot. Most people put it on the body of their hair, but I don't think that's necessary. Good to grow your edges too.
Marty
Hello Folks,
I want to start growing my hair, because a friend is doing the same. He said it would be a really good feeling if your long Hair waves in the Wind. He recommended me this site, so i can share all of my experiences. If you have some tipps feel free to let me know!

Recently I had to shave my head down to an incredibly short length, and I was hoping you fellas here would have tips on getting it back to its old luxurious state.

40 months today

Hi Longhairs and Longhair lovers,
it seems my hair and beard have reached terminal length. I did not remember when i had my last cut.
I had taken this photo in Jan 2018.
Greetings from Hamburg, Germany

My hair is now long enough for a decent ponytail. I like the feel of having the tail on my back. Want to grow the ponytail about double it's current length. It takes some work to maintain it, but I feel the work is well worth the effort.
Dale Monzano has a new video he recently posted on YouTube. This guy has calf-length hair. Check out the video to see what he's been up to lately.

Hello there, guys. Long time lurker (occasional poster) stopping by to say that Im starting the journey again. I went 6 or 7 months last time until I called it quits just as the awkward stage was calming down. I cut it back in January.
The more I look back at pictures the more I realize it was actually coming along nicely. Not quite sure why I gave up. Anyway, here we go again.

Hey guys, Im still here, not much new growth but holding on to what I have, will be 56 in September, still no grey except for the beard. Still playing the drums.

Hi everyone,
I haven't been very active lately and I thought I'd drop by again with a post and a video. I still have long hair and I enjoy it a lot. I'm at butt length, close to standard length and it makes me happy.
If I put it in a ponytail, the hair from tie to the ends is 89cm / 36 inch long, haha something to celebrate.
The ends seem dry and thin, I will do a trim again soon.
I hope you are all well! Have a nice day! :)
https://youtu.be/0v8bI-EdCE8 - 7 Year Hair Update Video
41 month update, been growing since 2015, 47 years old, had long hair few times in my life
I started growing a full beard and not trimming anything like I had been for years. I think trimming any hair that fell over my ears for years is why I wasn't getting length on the sides. What I'm doing on the sides is smoothing them straight down while wet and putting a leave in conditioner cream on them and then tuck behind my ears and it doesn't dry frizzy.
Marty
Well, almost 7 weeks ago I put down the hair dryer because my hair was so damaged that it was breaking and very frizzy. I also started spraying different natural oils mixed with water in my hair. My hair soaked it up and it never looked greasy but the frizzies were gone and the oils started repairing the damage I had done to my hair over years.
So what oils did I use-only natural and preferably organic oils and 100% pure. Coconut, jojoba, argan and extra virgin olive oil. I have 3 spray bottles and mix them with water but don't mix all the oils together. Here's a list of the bottles:
Bottle 1: 1/2 coconut oil & 1/2 water
Bottle 2: 3 tsp. jojoba oil, 1 tsp argan oil,1/2 tsp. coconut oil, 4 tsp water
Bottle 3: 3 tsp extra virgin olive oil, 1 tsp argan oil,1/2 tsp. coconut oil, 1/2 tsp. peppermint oil, 5 tsp water
Use a little of one of the bottles each day and spray on the ends of your hair and not on the scalp. Your natural scalp oil (sebum) will oil hair on the head/scalp. Shake the bottle up as water and oil won't stay mixed very long.
The coconut oil is organic baking oil that right now is a liquid because it's so hot here but when under 76 degrees F it turns into a white paste. Not sure if it will do that when mixed with water. This may not be good during the winter.
I've read that oil on the hair ends help protect it so that it won't break so easily and reach a longer terminal length.
What other natural oils have you guys found is good for the hair??
Marty
Well I'm growing a full beard and came across different people on the net saying peppermint oil can speed the growth rate of your beard and cited a study that was done with shaved mice and it ranked a little higher than Minoxidil over a month. Here's the YouTube video talking about that:
And then I found the attached link from somebody different taking specifically about the hair on your head and claimed you could get inches in a couple weeks if not sooner. So since I already had the peppermint oil I added it to my conditioner like she did. I put 15 drops into 13 oz of Aussie conditioner and let that sit on my head while I washed everything else (a couple minutes). It definitely made my scalp tingly! That's something. She did this every day I think for weeks.
Hopefully I can see inches of hair growth in a month!?
Marty
peppermint oil for scalp hairDoes your hair growth rate slow down as you age?
Marty
I heard the women of China like to grow their hair beyond waist length, but what about the men? It's already rare to find a man with hair that long, but maybe someone here knows something I don't.
I've had problems with my side hairs for years-it stays short and frizzy and now it's grey and wiry. I shaved most of the sides a couple months ago thinking that hair was damaged and would hopefully grow out smooth and longer than 2 inches. Now it's starting to get frizzy again but I want to moisturize it this time.
Does hair pomade do this? If not, what kind of cream should I look for?
Marty
I was skeptical when Carol first mentioned Traction Alopecia is why my hair had gotten thin because I thought there was only 1 way that guys went bald and that was male pattern baldness. I thought also that I was doing everything right with ponytails-leaving it a bit loose and using elastics with no metal that were made for the hair. However reading what I guess you could call symptoms are things I experienced off and on for years:
-Headaches on the top back of the head
-Hair thinning in front of head so looks like receding hairline
-Hair actually getting shorter rather than longer
Good news is that this kind of baldness is reversible in early stages by just leaving the hair loose. It can be permanent if it lasts for a long time and since it effected me for 18 years I figured I'd be bald in the back but fortunately for me my hair had also gotten damaged and dried out from hairdryers and would break before the roots got pulled out.
So now I've left my hair down for 2 months and I've seen my receding hairline and hair in the back of my head growing again. I've also been trying to get all the needed hair nutrients with food and filling in any gaps there by taking hair vitamins.
Hopefully this helps somebody!
Marty
I've seen 2 kinds of braiding helpers over the years. The first is just a simple piece of divided plastic that is just like using the spaces between your fingers but may complicate things. The second is more helpful but I'm not sure if it would pull or break your hair as you put your hair in this handheld tool with batteries and push a button and it twists your hair into a braid. Link below.
Has anybody tried either of these with more success than just using the space between your fingers?
Marty
Braid Machine
I'm happy-my thin hair is indeed growing. Lesson learned-no more tight ponytails.
Marty
I'm thinking about Minoxidil use for my thinning head back because of traction alopecia-I wore ponytails everyday for 18 years (even at night) which I'm reading is a no-no. My brother used it years ago for male pattern baldness and said your hair falls out if you don't use this for the rest of your life. My reason for using this medicine is because of a tight ponytail which my brother never had but would this just jump start my hair growth or make my head dependant on it?
Marty
I'm going through Bill's old posts and found this one from 2009 about cutting terminal short hairs in some areas-you'll be bald there.
Marty
Don't cut the short hairs
I'm enjoying the sunshine in England. Here, aboard the HMS Warrior at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, in Portsmouth. Hope everybody's having a great summer!

For the last 15 years my hairline in the front of my head had receded on the top sides so that it looked like I had a widow's peak but I wasn't born with one. My hair had also gotten thin in the top back so I figured I was just following the dreaded bald path of my dad.
However it really didn't get any worse and spread. About 5 weeks ago I started taking nature's bounty optimal hair, skin and nails (gel vitamins with 5000 MCG biotin) 3X a day and a couple week's ago I started seeing short baby hairs coming back on my front. My receding hairline was coming forward!! My hairline is still not perfectly straight on my forehead but looks a lot better than it has for over a decade and I hope those baby hairs will continue to spread to the back of my head. But if not, I can't readily see the back of my head! :)

I bought another boar's hair bristle brush to keep at home. The bottom is spongy to keep things gentle and the nylon bristles detangle hair and massage the scalp to encourage hair to grow while the boar's hair bristles help keep the hair from getting frizzy.
Marty
Detangling boar's hair brushAnyone know of a good salon in the Chicago area that knows how to work with long hair men? I'm looking for a good stylist for my mane. Thanks in advance!

Well, I bought a hooked ponytail cuff from a motorcycle site (link below and picture attached). There's a flexible hook on the inside so that any ponytail elastic could be used. I put this on like a regular ponytail holder with the cuff attached and let it fall to the side of my hands while I tied this. Then after it was tied I put the cuff on top of the ponytail but it wouldn't stay on top when I shook my head (it would stab my neck).
Maybe it's too loose or I'm just doing this all wrong and you slip the cuff hook over the tied ponytail? Any suggestions?
Marty
Spikes-Rhinestones-Hair-RingzI was doing an internet search on adding volume to your hair and saw conditioners which seem safe. Then they actually recommended putting heat in your hair with a blow dryer (I know from experience that these damage my thin hair), hair iron, and heated curlers.
How would you guys safely add volume to hair?
Marty
Hi all,
Here is something I came across today. Good on this boy and his mom to do this for charity. I'm proud of him. This made my day! I sure hope he grows his wonderful hair again though!
Ted

first time posting, read the post here and there, just thought Id introduce myself, Jim from New Jersey... been growing 40 months now.
I am going through Bill's old posts and found this gem about measuring or estimating with measurements your terminal length. So if your hair seems to not be getting as long as you'd like, try this and maybe the way your treating your hair is preventing it from getting as long as possible. Link below and page down to Bill's post with a picture (he's not saying cut your hair).

Still growing
I read here about water washes and that u don't need to use much lukewarm water to move sebum off your scalp and down your hair and it doesn't need to be done everyday. I need to wash pollens out of my hair everyday before I goto bed otherwise allergies will have me coughing all night.
So what I've been doing is using some water on the scalp each night with lots of conditioner and then spray coconut water on the ends once my hair is towel dried. In the morning I spray it with a jojoba and argan oil mist along with leave in conditioner. Seems like a lot of oil, but my damaged hair drinks it up.
Is this a good routine instead of the occasional water wash or would my hair become dried out eventually?
Marty

I had my mid back length hair cut back to shoulder length in December and now it's already to my shoulder blades. I dye it jet black (natural hair color is dark brown) but only dye the roots every few months to avoid any real damage; can't wait to see what another six months to a year will bring!
Also, I have been taking diatomaceous earth every day which is millions of years old sea fossils which turn into diatomaceous earth and it's 85% silica naturally which is great for hair. Biotin didn't seem to do anything for me and never noticed great growth with it unlike silica. After a few weeks of taking silica, I noticed my hair growing a little faster than it used to so that's how I knew it worked better than the biotin for me.
I read here years ago that 100% boar's hair bristle brushes are great for spreading scalp oil for fine hair. I bought one year's ago and it's excellent and highly recommended for fine hair!! I'm now thinking I'd like to buy a smaller 100% boar's hair bristle brush for my cargo pants pockets. I found the one linked below (careful, the cheaper brushes have synthetic materials mixed in with the boar's hair) and it claims to be soft in the title but the actual pictures say medium.
So are all boar's hair bristle brushes the same medium texture or are some softer than others like toothbrushes?
Marty
Palm sized boar's bristle brushI have a wedding for my brother in a couple months to goto and I started thinking today of the neatest way to wear my longhair. I'm thinking ponytail and really like the half ponytail look but I've always had trouble getting one in my wavy hair but a full ponytail is no problem. To dress it up some I'm thinking about a silver metal cuff like the one below. Does anybody know of any other place that sells these?
Marty
Metal hair cuffAnd looking a real twat :-(
I guess u could kinda say I'm back in the awkward stage. I had a lot of damaged hair that was staying short on the side of my head after years of growth-I figured I was going bald years ago and this was part of it but after almost 20 years of hair thinning that really hasn't gotten any worse I decided to shave the short hairs on the side of my head that wouldn't reach a ponytail and give it another go while taking hair vitamins and moisturizing my head (and no more hairdryers). Because the back and top of my head has long hair that I wear down, it covers over a lot of this but what I've found helpful at times to keep my hair out of my face (like when I'm at the GYM) are these elastic headbands.
I posted about them earlier and it seems like the site I bought them from has malware, so the link below is to a different seller on Amazon that sells something similar to what I have and supposedly they're Japanese. Go SAMURAI!!
Marty
Japanese Elastic HeadbandsTripped over this on the internet.
Braid cut at schoolLast few times that I went through airport security, every single time they had to pat down my back (where my hair is). To be fair, I do have below the belt length hair.
Anyone else have the same experience? I don't use TSA Precheck.
Hello!
Markus from Austria is here!
I guess I reached my terminal length so my hair journey is sort of over :)
My hair is down to my waist after 6 or 7 years of growing and over the past 3 months it has not got any longer. So I think it is my terminal length
Sure I am very pleased with it
But on the other hand the longer my hair gets the thinner it is and now I've get splitting ends issue... So I am wondering if I should keep this length or should have my hair trimmed a little...
Best wishes to everyone!

I bought little misting hair spray bottles and put this in one. The bottles are small 2.5 oz plastic but seem to take double this 'recipe' that I found online with these pure oils:
Argan oil: 1 tsp
Jojoba oil: 3 tsp
Coconut oil: 1/2 tsp
Water: 4 1/2 tsp
I put the oils into the bottle and shook then put the water in and shook again. It doesn't smell much but slightly like coconuts and keep shaking it up between hair sprays as water and oil don't stay mixed (maybe warming it up would change this).
I spray it in my hair each morning after brushing my clean hair (I wash it and let it dry at night). My hair seems to soak it up and hasn't been breaking so easily.
Marty

Hello everyone...I'm so happy this site is still active and thought I would pop in to share a photo with you
Scott from Nottingham

My band from the 80s was Metallica. They were the best longhair band around I thought. James Hetfield (first on left in picture) really looked cool!! Not so now-why did they cut their hair??
Marty

I do believe that John Romero (one of the creators of the hit game DOOM) has some of the best hair around. Any one agree?
Well, I had a blood test earlier this week for more detailed results on my thyroid. TSH is routinely tested every year and my doctor said it was OK at 0.74 where the range is (0.40-4.50), though it seems to me that it's on the low side of normal and further testing is warranted since I have an unexplained growth on my thyroid and seeing a thyroid specialist.
So I got more tests since my hair is thinning. These results seem to be OK as well. T4 free was 1.3 where range is 0.8-1.8 and T3 total was 94 for range of 76-181.
Unrelated is that my hair is not breaking since I put the hairdryer down. Hopefully it'll start to thicken in a couple months since my thyroid seems to work.
Marty
Hello, I am still in school with some long hair, and some people compliment my hair, but others like to tease and pull on it and call me names and all in all just be jerks about it, what should I do to help stop this, or learn to live with it?
I'm trying to let my hair air dry now, but it takes more than an hour and it's starting to get warm here so in the winter it may take twice as long. Since I take my shower before I go to bed, I really have to time things. Maybe I'll just start doing this in the mornings.
Is there a way to speed this up without the damaging effects of the hairdryer? Maybe sit in front of a window fan? I remember hair salons used to have these globe hairdryers that went over your entire head and dried it. Not sure if heat was involved and if it actually left all the hair oils there.
Marty
Hello, recently I have grown hair so long, that it is now in a bun. Getting made fun of for it, what should I do?

Just got this today. It's a bit tight for me to wear as a bracelet but if I had a 7" wrist then I could wear it that way. I would have no trouble stretching on my wrist to tie my hair, though. What I've done is just clip it on my keychain and put it in my pocket so it's handy.
Marty
This may be one of those obvious questions but need some advice. I have long hair and am very susceptible to severe sunburn. I'm not into caps or hats. My scalp burns even with my long hair. Anything I should (or could) do with my scalp to avoid sunburn?
Oh, in case u guys didn't know-hairdryers can damage hair. My dryer has high heat, low heat and cool. So for years I would finger dry it with that dryer on high heat and switch to low heat as it dried and then just use cold air but my wavy hair still got damaged. Bill says wavy hair is not as strong as straight hair-I'm not sure how he knew that-so maybe that's not a problem for people with straight hair.
Marty
I'm seeing people are saying castor oil can restore thinning hair-anybody here try it?
Marty

I took a nice picture for u of the various products I'm using over a month now and hopefully the clarity is good since it is scaled. I started growing my hair out back in 2000 and never cut most of it but it didn't get beyond the tops of my shoulders and for years I just figured I was going bald like my dad and now my younger brother. However what was called by other people as balding never got any worse over 18 years...it was damaged looking and thin which I now am thinking is part of a thyroid problem which was accidentally found 2 years ago. My scalp just isn't producing enough sebum to keep my hair moisturized and it had been breaking in my hands every time I touched it.
So with the help of some people on this forum (Poppa Bill Choisser and Cousin Carol) I was able to stop the breakage pattern 2 weeks ago. Now my hair is getting the moisture it wants and not breaking by my hands, hairbrush, or washings/conditionings anymore. I don't try to use the same products each day and the clarifier shampoo only gets used about once a month and I'm following that up with Aussie 3 Minute Miracle which I usually use once a week. The Aussie conditioner is very thick stuff and I like it as it can hold my hair on top of my head without using a hair band in the shower.
Some of these haircare products are VERY expensive and some are cheap DIY solutions. For instance-that coconut oil in the white tub on the right I found in the baker's isle. Coconut oil turns from a white solid to a clear liquid (the liquid in the jar to the left) under 76 degrees F. What I did was mix about 4 tablespoons of the coconut oil liquid with enough water to fill that spray bottle in between the 2 coconut oil jars for a nice leave in conditioner which hasn't reverted back to solid. And be aware that the OGX Argan oil is not a pure oil and has fragrance mixed in which I don't like and am hoping the fragrance can be covered over by mixing it with coconut oil. The jojoba oil has no smell if it is pure like I bought.
The pills-most people probably don't need hair vitamins but my body cannot produce sebum on it's own anymore and needs help. Hopefully these vitamins will work as I also have brittle nails and dry skin. Nature's Bounty makes these pills which I got off Amazon and 1 reviewer claimed they are getting their hair back after chemo and attributed it to these and plenty of other people gave them rave reviews. Carol recommended 1000 mg of MSM. I had been taking glucosamine for a bad knee joint and some of those supplements (like the one pictured) have MSM included. So that's what I bought to minimize all the supplements I'm taking which are many.
Everyday I do something different. That clarifier shampoo basically strips all the oils off your head so u need to follow that up with a lot of conditioning things. So yesterday I did a clarifying shampoo followed by that 3 Minute Miracle wash out conditioner. Then I massaged that ORS Hair Repair cream into my hair followed by a lot of the Aussie Hair Insurance leave in conditioner and let it air dry. In the morning I followed it up with that DIY coconut oil/water spray. Tonight I'm just gonna do a water wash for my hair followed by that Shea Moisture Argon Conditioner and some jojoba oil for a leave in moisturizer. Tomorrow something totally different-there's a lot to choose from!
I hope u find this helpful!
Marty

Story is from the I Can Has Cheezeburger meme website. The boy, Gideon Kidd, posts pics of him petting various dogs he meets. He has developed quite a following on Twitter. So, in addition to his focus on random dogs he meets, followers get to see a boy who chooses to have long hair. This kind of visibility, is of course good for breaking down old taboos about males & long hair.
There are additional links on the Cheezburger page (highlighted in blue text), and a selection of pics from Gideon's Twitter account of some of the dogs he's met. He has nice, thick, long light brown hair, and a winning smile as he poses with the dogs for pics.
ICanHasCheezburger - ''I've Pet That Dog.''I've been growing my hair out since 2000 and got a lot of advice from this board back in 2000-2004. I got busy and stopped hanging around this board but still have wavy long hair. Unfortunately it has never gotten past my shoulders in the back and the top barely gets to a ponytail holder and I just shaved the sides because they would only get to a fuzzy 2 inches and looked all strange.
So, I've been wondering for years why my hair is so brittle and seems to break early. I started thinking to how I've been wearing my hair at work and maybe this is it. I would let it dry and then brush it as straight as possible (I have wavy hair) and pull it back to a ponytail holder that was all elastic. Then I would spray my head/hair with water and then use a water based hair gel to keep it that way.
So would wetting hair in a ponytail holder and then letting it dry that way make it break? I have started wearing it down at work now and people I've worked with for years didn't know I had locks!!
I thought I'd give u guys some good news. For almost 2 weeks now I've been moisturizing my hair a lot with leave in conditioner, coconut oil (I just leave it in for an hour and then wash it out...it's called a pre-poo for the scalp so the shampoo cleans mostly the scalp-don't lather the shampoo through your hair and just gently massage into the scalp), and regular wash out conditioner. The result almost immediately was a lot less noticeable long hairs in my hair brush and in the shower. My hair is really thin/fine but I should be able to get a couple more inches with just moisturizing but I'm also just starting the hair supplements to see if I can make the new hair strands thicker.
Marty
I'm moisturizing my hair a lot with coconut oil, leave in conditioner and regular wash out conditioner. I don't want to start getting buildup on my wavy hair, though. How would I know it's time for a clarifying shampoo?
Marty

May 2018 Length. Getting there.
I am sold on purchasing hair vitamins, but which is best? I found at least 2 different brands that sell "Hair, skin, and nails"-those are Nature Made and Nature's Bounty. I think Natrol has hair supplements with the same name too.
I've read here that biotin is important, so I was trying to compare that but what is the recommended amount for longhair? Nature Made only has 2500 mcg in 1 gel cap while Nature's Bounty has 5000 mcg in 3 gel caps. Maybe take 2 of the Nature Made to get about the same amount of biotin?
Marty

Hi everybody,
I hope you all are doing well! I cut my hair back in October of 2017. I was at about 2 years or so. Not sure what the heck I was thinking! Needless to say, I am back on the journey now. I don't think I will be happy with my hair until at least the 2 year mark. Still trying to grow out the layers of the old haircut. I'm sure it will look much better when it's all one length. Here is the back view.
I've known for a couple years that I have a growth on my thyroid that is not cancerous. A specialist doctor did a biopsy and now does ultrasound to monitor growth every 4 months. She also keeps asking all these questions eveytime I see her but never askes about my thinning hair. I just read on the internet that there is a connection between the thyroid and hair health.
Has anybody here heard of this?
Marty

Well, I wanted to get a photo done of my thinning hair at the back of my head. I didn't even know it was there till people started saying I'm going bald...and that was years ago. I can't usually see it because my long bangs cover it up from the front when I push my hair out of my eyes. I don't think it's gotten any worse but I'm gonna start taking Nature's Bounty Optimal Solutions Hair Skin & Nails Extra Strength Supplements in a week and see if that helps anything. If it does I'll take an after photo and post that too.
Marty
I read yesterday that hair scalp pores can get clogged with coconut oil. I have a bald spot on the top back part of my scalp that I'm hoping is not genetic balding...how would I GENTLY unclog hair pores without messing up the surrounding hair? Baking soda??
Marty

... we lost our beloved Bill. I was reminded of the date by Marty's post of "On Being A Longhair," aptly described by Jason in his euology for Bill as his "seminal treatise." The world is not only a better place for longhaired men, but a better place as a whole, for Bill's having been here.
His intelligence, compassion, and quick-witted humor are still missed.
Warm regards to all of you,
Val
Hey Guys!
I have been letting my hair grow freely for the past eighty-five (85) months. It has grown to collar bone length. I have not seen any significant growth in the last two (2) years. I think my hair has reached terminal length.
Is there a way to stimulate new growth in order to help my hair grow longer?
Your long haired bro,
Raymond
I've had grey hairs come in on the side of my head for years that isn't smooth like my other hair and reaches a short terminal length of an inch or two. I just shaved the sides of my head and am wondering if a bunch of conditioner on the sides would help future grey hairs to be smooth or if grey hairs are supposed to be wiry?
I learned a lot about hair and how to take care of it from a longtime friend of this board named Bill Choisser. He died in 2016 I read, but his webpages still exist on hair:
http://www.choisser.com/longhair
If you're looking for some good reading on men's hair, I do recommend his 4 pages there.

For you guys with long hair... how do you detangle after a shower or sleeping without pulling you hair out?
They were saying on the radio yesterday that scientists think they have a cure for baldness.
Baldness treatmentHey Guys!
I am going to Houston. I land on Sun., May 6, 2018 at 11:53 P.M. I will spend Mon. with my brother and sister-in-law. My brother is giving me a van and we will be doing the necessary paperwork to effect the transfer of ownership. I will take them to the airport on Tue., May 8, 2018 and then I will start on my way back to New Mexico. Are there any long haired bros in Texas or New Mexico whom I might be passing by whom I might visit?

Here's a pic when I got my hair cut.
(aka - Greetings and Salutations)
Been a while for me being on here. What can I say, life is what it is.
Was inspired to post something when I stepped out of the shower this evening, glanced across at the mirror, and realized my hair has apparently been inching downward when I wasn't looking. The longest parts seem to be approaching the backs of my knees, or at least mid-thigh. Now I'm going to have to track down my camera to see if I can get photographic evidence.
Other than that, life continues pretty much as usual. Working for the DC Metro subway system, stuck on the graveyard shift, and hating an overly long commute. May be moving soon, so we'll see if that helps out my commute, at least.
In better news, family is largely doing well. My three boys have all become fine young men, and have two wonderful grandchildren that I don't get to see as much as I'd like (I know, typical grandparent complaint, LOL).
Oh, and more apropos to the site, turns out I'm not the only long-hair in the family. I'd known that one of my brothers *had* waist-length hair many moons ago, but saw a recent picture of him, and he's grown it out to about what the ladies would call "bra-strap" length.
Anyway, my best to all of you, hope to check in more often.

No, not goth, Growth!
Hey all, seeing as MarkS has come back to metalize this board, I thought I might as well join in.
I was an old time hair farmer on these here parts many years ago, went through a short period (hair not height, I'm 6' 4")!! and now I'm ready to return to my natural roots (albeit a little more grey) and grow my mop long again. Hopefully it will be as messy, chaotic as ever, it will certainly be interesting to see the results.
Here's a pic of where I am right now - from last cut Oct 2107, growing out pretty well I think.
I lurk but don't post, but thats gonna change :)
Good to be back, cheers chaps ;)

Hi, everyone! I'm not a regular contributor, thought it would be cool to share an update.
Looks frizzy and dry. Plus, the hair is gradually graying, definitely not going to add hair coloring other than shampoo and conditioner.
Thought about lopping it all off from the to time, other than that, going to keep it growing and flowing.

Hey guys, I used to be part of this hyperboard a long time ago.
I'm thinking about growing my hair back really long but I've been having issues with my hairline. I have no idea if it's receding or if it's always been like that. I don't want to go to a specialist and pay a bunch of money for him to tell me if it's indeed receding or not, so I'm asking your opinion.
Now, this is important to me because if my hairline is receding I won't grow my hair. I know some guys don't mind it and wear that look but for me personally, it won't work. I'm very OCD and I'd be thinking about it all the time.
Having that said, there's also a bit of a mystery going on with my hair. I only notice it receding with it's longish. When it's ultra short I don't see anything or any lack of hair.
I'll be posting 4 different pictures: the one on this message is the way my hair was when I had it long at 21 years old (I am now 31 years old).
Next I'll be posting two pictures (on different messages) with longish hair with red rectangles on them, where I think my hairline is receding.
The last pic will be one with shorter hair, and on that I can't see anything wrong.
Any thoughts? They'd be appreciated.

Here's the third pic, please refer to the first message to understand what this pic is about. Thank you.
I'll be honest, I'm a chick.
But upon discovering this website from a youtube video - a windows pc destruction video I decided to watch at 4AM, I've never had a better laugh in my entire life.
Now, don't get me wrong, I find guys with long hair very attractive - if not more attractive than guys with short hair - but I just think it's hilarious that there is a somewhat active forum on it.
I just wanted to thank you all for giving me such a laugh.
That is awesome.
Hi all,
I was just watching the ABC Nightly news and saw a reporter with long hair. His name is Zachary Kiesch. Most male news reporters have the clean-cut look so this was cool to see. I tried to find a good photo showing his hair, but there isn't many. Thought this was along the lines of the CEO thread. Here is his bio:

Hey guys it's been quite a while since I posted but wanted to give everyone a short update on myself. I moved back to Mississippi after living in Massachusetts for three years but returned home because things didn't work out for me up north and plus I missed my family. I suffered a light stroke not too long back causing me to have some health issues but I'm improving my health every day and gave up drinking a few months ago so that was a big decision for me bit it's for the better. I am still a long hair but it's at shoulder length now compared to my mid back icon photo but am growing it back to mid back or a little longer like I had it before. My ends were getting rough so I got a huge trim to fix it. Hope everyone new and old are doing good. Oh and I'm 31 years old now.

Here's the second pic, please refer to the first message to understand what this pic is about. Thank you.

Don
Those that have grown your hair long do you trim the ends? I am talking about split and damage ends.
Well, its been a long 3 months (after getting 2 years of growth cut off in 5 mins just before Xmas). Will not be making the same mistake again.
The 3 month mark is a horrible particular time, way before the proper awkward stage kicks in, this is just the looking completely shite stage. A bit longer than short but all out of shape and impossible to do anything to it, still too short to just gel it back. Some guys keep it in shape by keeping the sides trimmed whilst the top grows long but ive decided against that tactic as I want to be able to tie it back as quickly as possible so my plan is to just let it grow for at least 18 months and then maybe get the ends tidied up slightly.
Anyway, small steps have been made!
Hello everyone.
I was having long hair for traditional reasons as an Indian. I am not traditional religion of my Indian people. However, in the interest of not causing confusion to other people who are not traditional religion and do not understand that as an Orthodox Christian, I am permitted to have long hair, I cut it. This was in the interest of not hurting them or causing them any harm. If the situation were different, I would keep it. I cannot. I support the idea of long hair for those who want to have it and do not have cultural reasons to cut it. I found that I did. It is a highly nuanced life as an American Indian. Not that other people do not have a highly nuanced life, but there are multiple cultures that I must thread every time I meet some one.
People who follow the traditional religions often have long hair for their religious reasons. As an Orthodox Christian, I am permitted to have it and there are ways of carrying my cultures into the Church. However, in being an Orthodox Christian, I do not lose my tribal/people affiliations. I am not enrolled but speak 3 American Indian languages, so I am multiple people at multiple times. One of the peoples does not do traditional religion, but in two others some do and long hair often times shows that. In order not to cause confusion to other people who are weaker in their faith from my peoples, I decided to cut my hair. I have had the blessing of being able to talk to multiple persons from the peoples whence I come, and I have been acknowledged by them, so I am not ashamed of who I am, but want to be clear to them also about my identity.
I am glad to have been able to "talk" with all of you over the last few years. I will be here on and off I think, but I will not be posting about myself as I now do not have long hair any more. This was not done in anger and nobody really pressured me to do this. In the future, if the situation is clarified, I will probably grow my hair out again. I was doing it for mainly cultural reasons. Now that I know that there are higher faith and cultural reasons to not have long hair for me in my situation, I am not having long hair. Long hair does bridge the gap between traditional Indian living to mixed modern and traditional Indian living. I am mixed modern and traditional Indian living. I am traditional in everything except faith, where I am an an Orthodox Christian. Since I am a 4/4, American Indian Orthodox Christian, I need to be able to be myself and show my peoples who I am. As an American Indian Orthodox Christian, I can eat traditional food, use traditional clothing (as long as it does not have too much of a traditional religion connotation), I am pretty sure I can do Calumet as long as it is in a Orthodox setting and not one of traditional religion, play our games and sports, speak read and write our languages, use traditional methods of keeping time (I was taught to use the Sun for a clock and to watch the animals for behavioral changes to watch for changes in the weather such as bird migration), use traditional navigation skills (was taught how to use terrain etc), I can hunt and track (I was taught how to track by my dad), and much more. So in many ways, I can carry my cultures forward using our traditional knowledge to live a healthy full life as an Orthodox Christian.
Since I speak my languages, the enrolled people I have met believe me. I speak an Eastern Algonquian language, Cherokee (both Giduwa and Otali dialects), and a Seminole Dialect of Muskogee Creek that is older since my family did not do the Trail of Tears with much of the Muskogee Confederacy. These are my first languages. I take pride in speaking them and being an unenrolled Indian. If I did not speak my languages, I probably would not take much interest in the languages and my cultures. However, since I do speak them, I take an interest in getting connected with enrolled people in an effort to have community, even if I will never be enrolled in their tribes. It is a half-way house thanks (not really thankful at all, just using the expression) to the Federal Government and the Colonial Office (Bureau of Indian Affairs). If it were up to us, there would be our separate countries yet and the map of the U.S. would look a lot different.
In any case, thank you for all the help over the years. I have nothing against any of you, and nothing against the non-cultural imperialists in the U.S. Based on how I have gotten to know all of you, I do not see anyone on the board as a cultural imperialist.
Be well.

I apologize for my lack of participation lately. I have to say that I've been enthused to see the recent burst of activity both from new members and also old-timers! It inspired me to make a little update of my own.
I gave up (again!) on my quest for terminal length. I've been having my wife trim a few inches off every six months or so. It's been a few months from the last one and I've been noticing my hair definitely feeling longer again. If I had coarse hair, I'd without question follow through but my fine hair is frustrating to deal with. I just enjoy being a longhair regardless and having fresh ends has its benefits as well. Who knows? I might try again at some point.
I don't really have any "progress" photos so I'll just post a kind of "artsy" one I took not too long ago and a family picture. We continue to give our son free rein over his hair length. He's been adamant that he wants to keep it long. My wife gave him a trim shortly after the family photo was taken and it was cut a bit shorter than he actually wanted but it's still pretty long. It'll be back to the length in the photo pretty soon.
Let's keep the participation going!
Jason
Curious... How long would you define as long hair? Very long hair? Extremely long hair? Looking forward to your opinions.
The guy with extremely thick and gorgeous ankle length hair has posted another video. Does anyone have any idea who he is or where he's from?
Ankle length video
Hey all!
I've been a MLHH lurker since roughly 2007, when I started my long hair journey. I posted updates just a few times but with the increasing amount of activity lately; I wanted to drop by and say hi!
In June it will be 11 years since I started growing my hair. I tend to trim once a year lately because it seems that my hair isn't interested in growing past mid-back without being incredibly thin at the ends. In 2010 it was just about belly button length, but I can only dream about the hair I once had these days ;).
I hope everyone is doing well and it's still nice to see some old familiar faces around here!
Cheers,
DJ

My hair is now 16 inches long. Looking forward to reaching 18 inches. My goal for the time being is 24 inches.

So yeah I replied to the thread "Gender" earlier today and I'm assuming that I waiting.
You might remember me as Caesar from PA.
But now I'm Jade, and I live in NJ.
Oct 11th 2016 I came out as transgender. I was fed up with the discrimination that my family was a part of when insulting another trans individual I know. They weren't expecting it at all, few did. So they didn't take it well at all. April 2017 I packed everything I could and left for greener pastures.
Six months ago I started HRT(Hormone Replacement Therapy)
I figured I'd reach out hoping maybe you could somehow remove my old listing from the directory. I don't have access to those emails anymore.
Anyway I hope everyone is well, I'm hoping everyone else is living their lives the way that you know you should. I'm much happier now, but I can certainly say life hasn't gotten in any way easier.
Thanks,
Jade
What do you guys do with your hair at night? tie it up, leave it flowing???
This boy has super long hair

https://www.instagram.com/ulises.justo/What gender are you?
Before you answer, there are only two, it seems that in 2018
there are now many more than two genders.
Below is a list of all the genders.
Complete list of gendersI discovered a young mother with an autistic boy of about 9 or 10 years old. I haven't watched all the videos, and obviously the boy has a lot to learn about life. He fell victim of the US public school system and now appears to be home schooled.
Here is one of the videos:
Some commenters have sent nasty "get a haircut and man up" messages, and I have sent one to support his being allowed to keep his hair if he wants to. Obviously his mother has no problem with it.
Would some of you like to look at these videos and offer a word of support, and assure this boy that it is perfectly normal and good to have long hair?

Hey everyone I'm just checking in and saying hi

I finally have internet in my apartment.
Growing it out AGAIN and that was a very slow start to 2018!
Time has this uncanny knack of going very slowly when you want it to go fast!
Never ever going to make that mistake again, still wake up in disbelief that I was stupid enough to let someone with some clippers lose on my hair after 2 years of patiently growing it out! Hate my hair right now.
Apologies. Self absorbed rant over :-)

On request a new update, last one was in may 2017.
My hair has grown since then but I also had a 10cm trim in september.
So its about the same length as before.
I searching for a length Im comfortable with, this is the maximum I like.
Im thinking about a shorter length to be able to wear it loose more often.
In life everything is well, I got an open ended contract at my new job.
Its a smaller company as before but the same type of work (programming plc, and commissioning onsite)
Im learning to design the electrical control cabinet as well which will be my new challenge for this year.
I work part time now, 4 days a week instead of 5 and I like the balance of work/private life a lot better now. There are more important things in life then money and working.
Ive been together with my girlfriend for 4 years now, living together for 3,5 years. We are thinking about the future, we are going to do big maintenence to our home. We are speaking about having kids.
About a year and a half ago we got a puppy, we like her very much.
We like to take walks with her in the forest or on the beach.
Thats about it, I will try to stop by more often!
The Eagles will be in the Super Bowl in two weeks. Here's an interesting - albeit short - interview with Bryan Braman about his long hair.

I have just received a reproduction of the cravat that was a part of gentlemen's dress in the late 18th century and beginning of the 19th. You don't see much of my hair as it is tied up.
I'm actually glad I didn't live in the 1790's, at least in France. I might have got more than a haircut!!!

Hello Hairy People,
Quick introduction (for those who don't know or remember me):
My name is Ken, I'm 64. and I live in San Francisco, California. At one time I used to be one of the Moderators here (from '04 - '07, if I'm remembering correctly), during the time that Bill Choisser was the Chief Tech guy, Justin was the President of MLHH, and several of our current Moderators were also my fellow Longhairs-in-Crim (LOL)....
I also had the handle, "Longhaired Urban Cowboy" for quite awhile (before I decided to give myself the more boring name of "Ken in SF" - ROFL!!!)
Anywhoo, I still have long hair, has been at terminal length for many years, my last short haircut being on the first day of summer in Y2K. I recently asked my partner to please trim a few inches off the bottom, which I'm actually enjoying quite a bit right now, -- even though I miss saying that my hair is "belt-length" (it now only goes down to my lower back, but at least feels thicker & smoother, with definitely less split ends.
I think my silly long hair website still works -- although my old email address dos NOT....
(Which explains why I have to use a new email address at my work desk, since I have a broken computer at home... long boring story not worth narrating!)
"Why have you been so absent from MLHH, Ken?" you might ask. Well, unfortunately I've become a casualty of obsessing over watching too much News on TV, especially trying to make some sense out of all of the recent American political craziness from the past couple of years; but, rather than me go on & on about my least favorite U S President that now occupies the Oval Office (an understatement!), I'll just say: I need a BIG BREAK from listening to all of that CRAP!!!!!
Thank you for taking the time to read my long-winded intro, and your patience with hearing my soapbox (LOL), -- and to Mark Hairball: I will try to call you back sometime this weekend!
"Onward & Downward!"
Long Lox 4 ever,
Ken
Has anyone tried this out?
Keep reading that its the real deal and can at least double your hair growth.
7 straight days of massaging your head (with coconut oil) for 5 minutes, keeping your head in between your legs :-) And then 3 weeks off.
Anyway, today was day one for me so I will keep you posted. Impatience is what drives me!

This is how long my hair used to be 5 years ago....

Hi guys,
There's a long time I don't post here. My life suffered many changes, time is short, but I miss coming around to see old faces, some of them I used to know very well. Some of you might remember me. So, I'm back. Long haired again and bearded.
I have a longhair FB group called Long Hairs United. I put a link there to MLHH so we may be able to get more activity here. Anyone here can check out my group if they want to. I currently have 266 members. It is a closed group so only members can see it. The public can't.

Hi all,
It's been a long time since I've left a note here and even longer since I've posted a photo. It's been ages since I could say I had long hair... longish now, I guess ;p . Used to post monthly updates years and years back, until I was diagnosed with male pattern baldness... and on top of that, the wife (back then) hated my long hair, so one night in a fit of rage, she took a pair of scissors & my hair was gone in a matter of a "snip" ;o .
Well, time seems to mellow everyone a bit - in some ways more than others... my wife now accepts me for who I am - long hair and all, which is great ^_^ . Nearly 14 years of marriage and understanding will do that to a couple, I guess ;p heh~
Anyways, here's a photo taken this evening... think I've been growing my hair out for two year now ;o ? It doesn't seem to grow as fast as it used to - especially with age, but at least I haven't lost it yet xD ak!
One member here who remembered me from years past asked a while back how things were with my hair. My answer - surprisingly fine ;p ! My wife put some detangler in my hair this evening, took a photo from behind and truthfully, I was quite a bit shocked ;o ! I've hardly paid attention to my hair since I started growing it out again (afraid to look in the mirror - afraid to see that I might be losing my hair, maybe - eventually looking like my dad/grandad someday ;o ~)... but now, by the looks of it (hopefully), things aren't as bad as I had thought ;p (thankfully ^_^ )~
...so a word with anyone facing MPB. If you get diagnosed and treat it early enough, you won't lose your hair ;o (or so the Dermatologist says ;p ^_~ ). There are some nasty side effects with Finasteride... but if you're able to tolerate & are able to get used to it (including learning some tricks, including taking it at night), it eventually evens out in the end :) . Honestly, I think since I started taking the stuff, my hair actually looks better ;o ! Strange ;p ~
Anyways anyways, just wanted to say hi again - cheers to anyone who might still remember me & to those who may not - and also to those who are new :) . I am still here - just in the shadows ^_^ ~
Sincerely,
yoshiki :)

Dear Gang,
I realized I hadn't posted an update on the board in some time, so here it is!
As you can probably tell from my picture, I have cut my hair back in length some. After discussing with my hairdresser that I wanted to transition to wearing my hair unbound more of the time, she suggesting taking a few inches off and doing a bit of layering. That was back in early November if I remember correctly. I have been in school full time in 'ulpan,' which is a full-immersion Hebrew language program for recent immigrants in Israel. The ulpan I chose to attend is in Tel Aviv, which is a very 'hip' city in contrast to Ashqelon, where I live, which is much more conservative. I've been enjoying wearing my hair loose most of the time as I ride the train to TLV, circulate in TLV, attend class, and ride the train back home. Apart from occasionally getting a little hair pull when I put on my backpack, I like wearing it loose! I do get some hostile-looking stares, almost exclusively from women. It's interesting that, for many women, if a man grows his hair long he's somehow invading some exclusive female territory. Ah, who cares??!
In the same time, Clara and I have bought and moved into a new-ish apartment in Ashqelon, with four bedrooms, so I finally have my own library/workroom for the first time in years. It's in a nice neighborhood, with conveniences nearby and a sea-view from our balcony. Of course, as soon as we moved in we had to do some renovations. Clara now wants a new kitchen. This, even though I'm the cook more often! But, never mind! She'll have her kitchen...and I'll enjoy using it!
I also bought a sailing boat, in England. She's sitting lazily on a mooring on the River Hamble, waiting (patiently, I hope) for me to pay attention to her and bring her down to the Mediterranean. The plan is to cross the English Channel in her in the summer, take her through the French Canals to the Med by late August. Anthony, I'll have to find out where you live and see if I can work your town into my itinerary! Imagine an Anglican Priest and a Rabbi, both with long hair, enjoying a sail! (We'll have to twist Raymond's arm into coming, too! Do I see the opening of a joke in there??! Ah, never mind!) Perhaps I'll leave her in the South of France while I return to Israel for the high Holy Days, then go back and coastal-hop along the north shore of the Med, to Greece and leave her there for the time being.
I've wanted to have a sailboat for many years. I did have a boat briefly when I lived in Australia, but had to sell it when my tenure in the country became uncertain. Now that I'm retired, and permanently living in Israel, I decided to find The Boat; I had to go all the way to England to find what I was looking for! (She's a British-built Colvic Watson.)
So that's the update. Hoping everyone else is doing well and surviving winter and the dried-out hair it brings!
Don
Hello, everyone!
My name is Paul, I am from Estonia, it's a tiny country in the Northern Europe, somewhere between Finland and Russia :)
I am 36 and have been wearing long hair for 10 years at least...sad to say my mane is not very long, my hair stopped getting longer after reaching my shoulder blades
but I enjoy this length
here are a couple of photos of me

Hi my name is Mic! I am 17 years old. All my life my mother has given me the at home haircuts because my father is ill and has a surgery for something different every year. So we try to save every penny we have for him. My hair looks like an awkward mushroom and I try to tell her to do something different but its hard as I have severe scalp psariosis. Basically my skin cells grow rapidly, while everyone elses grow normally. So Im kind of chained to one haircut. As my mother and father grew up with no nonsense parents they always tell me I cant have long hair. I cant wait to grow it! I want to know how can I grow out bangs that are cut in a straight line so I dont have to have those be so blunt. My hair grows fast and is thick. So its a yikes. Thick brown bangs and a bowlcut at 17, life is rough. Any comments are encouraged! When did you all start growing your hair out. And did anyone have the dreaded bowlcut? As a kid/teen? Have a great night/morning!
Hello MLHH! :)
I'm Avi! I'm really happy to meet you all. Since I was a kid I've always known I've wanted to grow really long hair- its just something I knew was right for me and it really beckoned to me for reasons I really don't know. I still have that dream- however, I'm a minor(16 right now) and my parents are very strict about this sort of thing- I'm still a short-haired teen at the moment unfortunately. When I head off to college in about 1.5 years I plan to start growing my hair out- I'm looking to get to floor length. And I know it's a very long journey, one that will probably take over a decade- but I'm very set on taking that journey. I just know it :) Seeing that so many of you have the same calling makes me happy that I have others to relate to and help me on this journey. I just wanted to start to get to know you guys and hear from you about your personal tips regarding hair care and where exactly to start when I start growing out- I want to make sure to keep my hair as healthy as possible and I want to know what I'm doing when I start, so that I don't screw up somewhere along the way and mess up the work I've put in. So yeah, I just want to hear input in all regards from y'all- what challenges have you faced? how do you take care to ensure your hair stays healthy? what do you recommend I do at the moment as I still have 1.5 years before I leave the house?
I appreciate anything you guys can give me, thanks so much :)

For the philosophers among you I found this beautiful quote on the internet:
To romanticize the world is to make us aware of the magic, mystery and wonder of the world; it is to educate the senses to see the ordinary as extraordinary, the familiar as strange, the mundane as sacred, the finite as infinite.
This beautiful young man took the pen name Novalis, but his real name was Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg (2nd May 1772 25th March 1801). Like many philosophers and poets of that era, he died very young of tuberculosis. He also had long natural hair which you can see in the photo.
The symbolism is there, long hair being a sign of "nobility of spirit" as many philosophers in the tradition of German Idealism and Romanticism expressed. I am presently reading an English translation of some of his work, which is beautiful.
Hi,
I have been following this site for years, being a lover of long hair on men, bit not being able to grow my own.
I started to get a receding hairline at 16, and despite growing my hair long in college for a couple of years, I have been buzzed and shaved for many many years.
Finally, after some soul-searching, I am going to get a hair system, and it's going to be a long-haired one.
I wanted to know if any of you have experience with hair systems? This is going to be an expensive one, that I am having custom designed, and I am hoping it will look good.
Best.
Sam
Am I the only one who has a problem with my curly long hair. None of my other long haired friends have it and i wonder if its a common problem. It constantly gets knotted and it is difficult to go swimming.
Thanks

I've been a fan of this board (and men's long hair in general) for quite some time. There has always been something majestic and powerful about a man with lovely flowing locks. I've always fantasized about having a long, dark and thick braid of hair that would flow down my back like a true warrior of olden time. I feel inspired by all the brave long haired men who frequent this website and wish to join your ranks. The only problem is that my hair is curly. I have what many call a "Jew-fro" and because of this my hair doesn't get "long". It just gets bigger. All my guy friends make fun of me for it calling me mean names like "curly boy", "Shirley Temple", and the worst of all "Pube Head". My question is can I still post my hair updates here even though I don't exactly fit the ideal Men's Long Hair Hyper Board image?
Seeing as we have a multi-faith crew here, Happy December. I have been visiting the site off and on for a while in the last few months and am happy to see people being themselves and such. I am happy to see that there are new people posting and glad to see people from Russia on board here too.
I want to give a shout out to Don in Israel and say I am happy that you are having a good time in Israel and that you are enjoying the Holy Land. I really appreciated the general invitation to join you in Israel because depending on how long standing that is, I may end up taking you up on that. It would help me as a Orthodox Christian because it would allow me to have a base from which to jump off in order to get to the sites I would want to see.
I am not so sure about doing synagogue stuff without permission of an Orthodox Priest or Bishop, but I would enjoy getting to know the local area from your perspective. I enjoy "Jewish" food like latkes and Hammantaschens since I hung out with the Hillel group at college. I learned how to cook Kosher and was kind of off and on with a lady who was part of the Hillel, so I have gotten to see some Jewish life from the close up without being Jewish myself.
Hitting up Haifa and the Med. would be fun. I keep watching the developments with the move of the U.S. Embassy from Tel-Aviv-Yafo to Jerusalem. I hope that Israel does not get invaded when and if the Trump administration moves the Embassy. The U.N. resolution against the U.S. and Israel yesterday was disheartening. Let's hope there is not another intifada with the move.
One interesting connection between the Cherokee and the Jews is that there appears to have been Jewish people among the Cherokee early on in the history of the Jewish presence in North America. Check out People of One Fire and see what you think. It is a web-site run by an unenrolled Muscogee man. He points out that cultural things seem to be similar between Jewish people and Cherokee people in some cases. Whether there is a strong case for the Cherokee giving refuge to the Jewish people or not when the Jewish people were fleeing the effects of the Inquisition in Spain, is a question, but it is an interesting thing to check out nonetheless. I am an unenrolled person but I speak Cherokee as one of my first languages and I would be fascinated to see Israel from a Hebrew's perspective.
If this sort of thing does come up in the future, I would want to set-up some kind of payment for the stay and food if that were part of the visit. I would also want to make sure that you would be comfortable with Orthodox Christian items being in your home such as icons or books. I wear a cross like most Orthodox Christians do and I do not know if that would be offensive to you or not. I usually wear it under the clothing but for events like swimming, the cross would probably be seen if a shirt were not worn. If you needed help around the house or something like that while I were there, then that would be fine if you wanted to do in kind payment or something like that. Being that I am culturally American Indian, doing in kind trades and stuff like that is normal for me, just to put that out there.
Hope everyone is having a good December.
Hello,
I would like to grow my hair out.
Thanks
-Thanks

Hi Everybody, next year March I will have been growing for 7 years. This is my progress so far. Slowly getting there. Thanks Lance
Just some ramblings here. Basically, I had my hair long for 4 years. I cut it in Jan 2016. What followed was a strange perception of energy.
One of the major feelings that I felt, was I felt "spiritually naked" I had less intution. I couldn't pick up on vibes as much as I normally can. For instance, with long hair, I could pick up on the energy of an entire city or region etc.
When I was clean cut, I basically had no intuition. I also felt more hypersexual. This one I don't really understand. I guess I was more "Sexually acceptable" to women in general. I vibed more with the attractive women I went near.
With long hair, I have to be careful where I look. In a sense that, If I stare at people too long they get offended. From the years of 2014-2016, I walked a certain trailer (2 years) every so often. I was drawn to this trail by the lake, and other places like it for the years I had my long hair.
When there I would get complete calm and peace.
After I cut my hair, going to those places, I didn't feel it anymore. They say that hair is sort of an Antennae for perception I suppose. It receives different frequencies. I suppose this is true. Recently I've grown my hair out long-ish again, and I am starting to pick up on those "vibes" once again. Those calm vibes.
Whereas, if I had my hair short I wouldn't be able to "read" the calmness.
Hard to explain.
My energy levels fluctuate. I guess you could say I was more physically active with short hair. It's sort of like an entire body of energy. I notice my psyche and subconcious is more directed to wordly things.
Long hair I tend to keep my psyche and subconcious directed towards spiritual growth etc.
Hope some of this make sense
